What to expect after the Wisdom Teeth Removal?

The recovery after a wisdom tooth removal depends on the type of the extraction you had. It’s one thing to have an erupted loose tooth easily extracted and another thing when the tooth was stuck into the jawbone. Anyway, in both cases, recovery is the last important step.

Besides pain that can be reduced with painkillers, there are a few symptoms you may experience such as:

  • bleeding for several hours;
  • bruises on the face around the jaw;
  • disagreeable mouth taste;
  • itches or numbness in lips and tongue;
  • facial swelling in the oral area where the tooth was extracted or other inflammations of the mouth and cheek – severe in the first few days;
  • rigid jaw within for the next 7 to 10 days.

What to do in the first 24 hours in case of wisdom teeth removal?

For reducing the bleeding, if any, use a clean soft mull or a moistened tea bag on the place your tooth used to be and press firmly with constant pressure for about 45 minutes. Repeat if necessary, but if bleeding continues, you should call your dental surgeon. Don’t rinse and spit, avoid smoking or drinking through straws.

Liquid diet is required during the drowsiness after the anesthesia and soft food diet is indicated for a few days.Stay away from hot liquids such as tea, soup or coffee!

To remove facial swelling, use cloth wrapped ice on the area on and off every 10 minutes.

Usually, when having a wisdom tooth removal procedure, the dentist prescribes some serious painkillers. If he did not, use the usual ones, such as Tylenol, Motrin or Advil. If before the tooth extraction you have been prescribed antibiotics, you should continue to take them further, until the prescription ends. When taking narcotic pain medication alcohol is strictly forbidden.

Brush your teeth as usual but avoid the extraction area.

What to do after the first 24 hours in case of wisdom teeth removal?

Use warm salt water as rinsing water after eating and before going to sleep. Avoid commercial mouth rinses.

Call your dental health care provider to schedule a stitches removal procedure in one week, unless you have self-dissolving stitches.

Take care of the facial swelling with warm towels on the affected areas applied constantly every 20 minutes for as long as it is necessary.

Stay alert for signs of dry socket which means dislodging the blood clot formed, a common complication that occurs three or four days following the extraction. If this happens, call your dentist!

Avoid exercising and tiresome tasks for a few days.

Provide extra comfort while sleeping at night with more pillows.

Be aware that the complete healing process after the wisdom tooth removal procedure takes from a few weeks to a few months. In the first two weeks the healing is faster and you should feel better in the area where the extraction took place. Any other detail about you specific case of wisdom teeth removal will be given you by your dental.
